At a weekend hockey tournament in December 2024, a boy’s sudden headache and nausea led his firefighter father to suspect carbon-monoxide poisoning, a theory confirmed when fire officials measured CO concentrations between 90 and 150 ppm inside the arena, especially in the dressing room. The exposure affected the boy, 22 other children aged about 10-11, and two adults, all of whom were treated at Alberta Children’s Hospital.
The parents, who co-authored a piece in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, highlighted the lack of required CO detectors and inconsistent ventilation practices across Canadian ice rinks. They note that federal guidance exists but no binding regulations, and that similar incidents have been recorded across the country over the past decade. Experts cited explain that combustion equipment such as ice resurfacers can emit dangerous gases if poorly maintained, and that symptoms can be severe for athletes breathing heavily. The parents hope increased awareness will drive the adoption of monitoring devices and stricter air-quality standards.
