Paris Court Sentences Six to Prison for Manslaughter in 2021 Channel Migrant Tragedy

In a landmark ruling, a Paris court sentenced six men to between six and ten years for manslaughter linked to the 2021 Channel disaster that claimed more than 30 lives. The tragedy occurred when an overloaded dinghy deflated while attempting to cross one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, prompting a French fishing vessel to report bodies near Calais. The court also found seven other defendants guilty of lesser smuggling charges, imposing sentences from six months suspended to four years.

The deceased included primarily Iraqi Kurds, as well as Afghans, Ethiopians, an Egyptian, a Somali, an Iranian Kurd and a Vietnamese national; four victims were never recovered. Only two migrants survived the incident. Relatives, such as Zana Mamand Muhammad, testified about the enduring anguish caused by the loss of their loved ones.
