Paris mayor unveils emergency heat-mitigation upgrades for schools ahead of 2026 term
Paris mayor Emmanuel Grégoire announced that dozens of primary schools and collèges have received emergency heat-mitigation equipment for the 2026 school year.
Paris’s socialist mayor Emmanuel Grégoire used a September briefing at a 2nd-arrondissement elementary school to detail the city’s rapid "DIY" response to rising temperatures. Emphasising his commitment to keep public education services running during heatwaves, he presented figures on emergency renovations carried out over the summer. Out of 616 primary schools and 114 public collèges slated to open in 2026, 13 schools were equipped with air-cooling devices covering 81 classrooms, 22 schools received solar shading, 35 new "courtyard oasis" installations were delivered, and six schools gained outdoor canopies.
Window upgrades included solar-film on the glass of 71 schools and replacement of window frames in 28 establishments, with some locations benefiting from several measures. The mayor framed these actions as a stop-gap "bricolage" to protect students while longer-term climate strategies are developed.
