Paris police bar original route for Interfac protest, offer alternative path
The Paris police prefecture issued an order cancelling the planned Interfac Ile-de-France march route and suggested a different itinerary.
On Thursday, the Paris police prefecture released an order that blocks the originally announced route for the Interfac Ile-de-France march set for Saturday. The protest was to start at place de la République and proceed to place de la Concorde, passing the Grands Boulevards, boulevard des Capucines, boulevard de la Madeleine and rue Royale. Prefect Patrice Faure argued that the original plan posed significant public-order risks and offered a substitute course connecting République to Nation.
The protest leaders declined the suggested path, leading the prefect to enforce the prohibition of the initial itinerary. Separate from this, a separate demonstration organized by gilets jaunes and supported by some unions will follow a route from place de l'Opéra to place de la Bastille.
Why it matters
The decision shows authorities balancing protest rights with security concerns in Paris.
