Paris police report over a thousand arrests as student protests turn violent

Since the start of the high school protests, 1,260 people - 86% minors - have been detained in the Paris area, while dozens of officers were injured.

According to the Paris police prefecture, the ongoing high-school demonstrations have led to 1,260 arrests across the metropolitan area, 86% of whom are minors. Injuries among security forces have climbed to 286, including 71 police and gendarmerie officers hurt on Tuesday alone, with two undergoing immediate operations and about ten taken to hospitals. The prefecture highlighted the presence of hostile participants who removed paving stones to hurl at officers and deployed powerful fireworks, as identified by the central police laboratory.

In addition, 13 employees of the Ministry of Education were reported wounded during the clashes. The escalation in violence, described as intensifying over recent weeks, prompted a dispersal of protesters at Place Vauban.

Why it matters

The surge in arrests and injuries underscores rising tension between French authorities and youth protesters, raising concerns about public order and civil liberties.
