Parliament debates Supply Bill 2027, spotlighting fuel subsidies, school safety and welfare reforms
Lawmakers opened the first policy-stage debate on the Supply Bill 2027, urging changes to fuel subsidy targeting, education safety and public-welfare programmes.
The Dewan Rakyat began its policy-stage debate on the Supply Bill 2027, with 13 MPs from government and opposition raising a range of issues. Rushdan Rusmi suggested linking subsidy rates to a Brent crude price threshold and using the resulting savings for programmes such as Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah. Ahmad Johnie Zawawi urged the Ministry of Education to reassess rural schools in Sarawak, address classroom and staffing shortages, and fast-track safety inspections.
Other members called for upgrades to dilapidated school facilities, expanded duties for school security guards, and immediate water-tanker purchases for Labuan’s supply crisis. Proposals also included front-loading Sabah’s development funds and increasing recruitment of Malaysian Chinese and Indians into the civil service to correct ethnic imbalances. The debate will continue tomorrow.
Why it matters
The discussion could reshape Malaysia's subsidy policy, education safety standards and regional development funding.
