Parliament moves to examine MP Timo Vornanen's right to serve after conviction

After Timo Vornanen received a final prison sentence, a parliamentary initiative aims to trigger a constitutional committee investigation into his eligibility to remain an MP. The proposal, backed by several party groups, is intended to keep the process non-partisan. The constitutional committee would first examine the case and then forward its recommendation to the full chamber, where a two-thirds vote could terminate his mandate.

The legal basis allows the parliament to act when a member is convicted of a crime that undermines public trust. Vornanen's sentence, upheld by the Supreme Court, includes eight months of conditional imprisonment for multiple offenses.
