Parliament suspends immunity of three MPs as arrests and investigations proceed
Hungarian parliament halted the immunity of Prime Minister Magyar Péter, MP Hankó Balázs and MP Seszták Miklós, leading to their detention and ongoing criminal probes.
On Monday the Hungarian parliament voted to lift the immunity of three high-profile politicians: Prime Minister Magyar Péter, Fidesz MP Hankó Balázs and KDNP MP Seszták Miklós. Following the decision, Hankó was detained at the National Tax and Customs Administration’s Huszti Street office and moved to Kecskemét, while Seszták was taken into custody and sent to the Nagy Ignác utca prison. The Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor’s Office has asked a district court to order further detention of Hankó, with the judge set to decide on October 1, 2026.
Répássy Róbert, a former justice minister now practicing law, warned that both cases will involve multiple hearings, additional testimonies and possible extensions of the detention if the reasons for the original order persist. He also noted that the phone-theft case involving Prime Minister Magyar Péter is likely to move to a formal accusation stage, after which the prosecution will decide whether to file charges.
