Parliamentary budget committee braces for heated debate over next year's spending plan
The Czech lower house budget committee will debate the 2026 state budget, which the finance minister says includes record investments, while opposition members warn of excessive borrowing.
On Monday, the Czech Chamber of Deputies' budget committee will examine the government's proposed 2026 budget. Finance Minister Alena Schillerová highlighted unprecedented investment, a public-sector salary overhaul, a return to a health-budget surplus and a historic allocation of a portion of GDP to the defence ministry. Committee chair Vladimír Pikora warned that the discussion will be lengthy, sharply contested and largely symbolic, echoing past confidence-vote disputes.
Opposition members, notably SPD deputy Miroslav Ševčík, objected to the size of the deficit and suggested deep reductions in defence, interior and other ministries. The proposal forecasts higher revenues and expenditures than earlier drafts, with notable increases for the ministries of interior, labour, education and industry, while cutting spending in the general treasury office. Overall, the debate signals a clash between the government's growth-oriented agenda and opposition calls for fiscal restraint.
