Parliamentary club chief warns Left's alcohol law changes could cost small businesses tens of thousands

Mirosław Suchoń, head of the Klub Parlamentarny Centrum, cautioned that the Left’s proposed amendment to the alcohol-education law may force restaurateurs and small brewers to incur one-off expenses of up to several tens of thousands of złoty.

In a recent interview, Mirosław Suchoń, leader of the Klub Parlamentarny Centrum, warned that the Left’s revision of the law on sobriety education and anti-alcoholism could have severe financial repercussions for small-scale food and drink businesses. The legislation under discussion in the Sejm seeks to tighten advertising and promotion of alcoholic beverages, restrict sales, and give local authorities broader enforcement powers.

Suchoń highlighted that the rules would affect branding on outdoor elements such as umbrellas, tables and other garden fixtures, forcing owners of restaurants, small wineries and family breweries to replace these items. He estimated that the necessary upgrades could amount to “kilkadziesiąt tysięcy” of one-time spending per establishment, a sum he described as “very high”. The politician stressed that these costs could strain the viability of many local enterprises and community events that rely on outdoor serving areas.

Why it matters

The proposed law could impose costly equipment changes on small food and drink businesses, affecting local economies and consumers.
