Parliamentary committee pushes for Szijjártó's testimony on BYD dealings
Members of the National Security Committee have called for former foreign minister Peter Szijjártó to appear before the panel over his ties to Chinese automaker BYD.
Parliamentary National Security Committee member Pál Czakó-Czibrus said the panel will summon former foreign minister Peter Szijjártó for questioning about his involvement with Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD. He presented ministry records indicating that, while serving as minister, Szijjártó allocated multi-billion-forint state infrastructure projects to BYD and approved the accelerated admission of several thousand Chinese guest workers for the company.
Czakó-Czibrus argued that Szijjártó’s access to highly confidential foreign-policy and security information creates a serious national-security concern if it benefits a foreign corporation. The committee’s authority allows it to require Szijjártó’s appearance, but it cannot impose substantive sanctions, limiting potential consequences for non-compliance.
Why it matters
The hearing could reveal whether a former minister’s actions gave a foreign firm undue advantage and threatened Hungary’s security.
