Parliamentary committee to confirm special inspector nominee, ending decade-long vacancy

A parliamentary committee will adopt the confirmation report for Choi Kil-su as special inspector, filling a post that has been vacant since 2016.

A parliamentary legislation and judiciary committee is scheduled to adopt the confirmation hearing report for Choi Kil-su, a former senior prosecutor nominated by President Lee Jae Myung, on Thursday. The decision follows a hearing held roughly a month earlier and reflects a recent agreement between the ruling and opposition parties to include both favorable and unfavorable evaluations of his suitability. The special inspector position was established in 2014 to probe alleged irregularities involving the president’s spouse, relatives, and senior officials, but has remained vacant since 2016 because of disagreements over candidate recommendations.

Three candidates were put forward by rival parties and the bar association, with Choi emerging as the nominee. The inspector will hold office for three years, tasked with investigating corruption allegations linked to the president’s family and senior aides.

Why it matters

Filling the post restores an oversight mechanism for probing alleged presidential corruption.
