PAS lawmaker urges targeted support for M40 in upcoming 2027 budget

Bachok MP Syahir Sulaiman called on the government to include a specific assistance package for the middle-income M40 group when the 2027 budget is presented.

In a statement ahead of the budget tabled on Friday, Syahir Sulaiman of Bachok urged the government to craft a targeted "support package" for Malaysia’s middle-income M40 households in Budget 2027. He highlighted that escalating expenses for healthcare, childcare, education and housing are consuming a larger share of household incomes, especially for those caring for both children and elderly parents. While the national economy has shown strong growth and a stable labour market, Sulaiman contended that these macro indicators have not translated into improved living standards for many citizens.

He referenced the Finance Ministry’s claim that the M40 has not been excluded from assistance, noting existing subsidies and job programmes, but insisted that more direct, tailored aid is needed. The proposal comes as the government prepares to present the fifth Madani Budget, which aims to raise growth ceilings and improve well-being. Sulaiman’s appeal underscores the political pressure on policymakers to address cost-of-living concerns for a key economic cohort.

Why it matters

Middle-income families face rising living costs, and targeted aid could affect Malaysia’s economic stability.
