PAS urges Malaysia to follow legal process over India’s Zakir Naik extradition request

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan emphasized that Malaysia’s longstanding trade and strategic relations with India must not compromise its extradition statutes. He warned that Zakir Naik might be treated as a diplomatic concession if the government prioritises friendship over due process. Hassan called for the government to clarify one outlet legal and diplomatic standing of India’s extradition request, detail any talks between Prime Minister Anwar and Prime Minister Modi, and confirm whether the supporting evidence meets Malaysian legal standards.

He also questioned whether any agreement had been reached and urged transparency from Putrajaya. The statement follows reports that Anwar discussed the matter with Modi during the BRICS summit and reiterated the need for cautious, law-based action. India originally sought Naik’s extradition in 2018 on money-laundering and hate-speech allegations, which Naik denies, while Malaysia has said it requires concrete evidence and Interpol has repeatedly refused a red notice.
