PASOK spokesman Tsoukalas accuses government of mishandling private debt relief

PASOK spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas says the government's new private-debt scheme is a short-term communication stunt that fails to solve borrowers' problems.

In a statement, PASOK press officer Kostas Tsoukalas condemned the government's handling of the private-debt issue as a brief publicity effort rather than a real solution. He pointed out that the prime minister, after pressure from PASOK, unveiled a 120-installment plan that does not erase interest or surcharges and applies only to debts incurred up to 2024, leaving out those already under active restructuring except recent 72-installment cases.

Tsoukalas highlighted that the measure imposes a higher interest rate than previous schemes and fails to address the broader burden on households and firms. He pledged that PASOK will submit its own proposal to meet societal needs and called for the prime minister to justify his policy choices. The spokesperson concluded that the public deserves breathing space from mounting debt pressures.
