Patna court hands two-year jail term for instant triple talaq, acquits acid-attack claim
A Patna judge sentenced Naushad Ahmed to two years of rigorous imprisonment for pronouncing instant triple talaq, while clearing him of an alleged acid-attack on his wife.
In Patna, Naushad Ahmed received a two-year rigorous imprisonment sentence after the court found him guilty of uttering instant triple talaq against his wife of nearly 21 years, violating the 2019 protection act. He was additionally convicted for voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint, with a fine of Rs 6,500 that carries a further one-month-plus imprisonment if unpaid. The allegation that he tried to douse his wife with acid was rejected, leading to his acquittal on that count.
The case stemmed from an FIR filed in September 2022 at Phulwari Sharif police station. Ahmed's lawyer, Shekhar Kumar, argued that the prosecution failed to prove the acid-attack and said the verdict would be challenged in the high court. This marks the first triple-talaq conviction recorded in Patna district.
Why it matters
The ruling enforces India’s anti-triple-talaq law and highlights judicial handling of domestic-violence allegations.
