Patriotism divides Democrats and Republicans sharply in new values poll
A recent Gallup-With Honor survey shows only 6% of Democrats rank patriotism among the top three national values, versus 46% of Republicans.
A Gallup and With Honor survey released Sunday reveals the widest partisan split on core national values, with 46% of Republicans and only 6% of Democrats listing patriotism among the three most needed values. The study, fielded from May 12 to 22 among a nationally representative panel of more than 3,000 adults, also shows Republicans favor responsibility and honesty, whereas Democrats prioritize equality, fairness and honesty.
Independents fall between the parties, most often selecting honesty, responsibility and integrity, and only 15% naming patriotism. Despite the divide, a majority of respondents believe at least one of twelve values—such as freedom, service, or kindness—is widely shared. The poll also highlighted strong age differences, with seniors three times more likely than younger adults to endorse patriotism. Finally, 79% of Americans said respecting differing values matters more than sharing the same ones, and 70% urged leaders to compromise across party lines.
