Patriots rely on towering receivers to boost red-zone efficiency

New Patriots receivers, highlighted by their height, are expected to dramatically improve the team’s red-zone scoring after a strong showing in early camp drills.

Last season the Patriots excelled overall but struggled inside the 20-yard line, finishing 20th in red-zone scoring. Coaching staff believes the addition of several tall receivers—Brown (6-1), Doubs (6-2), Hollins (6-4), tight ends Hunter Henry (6-5) and Eli Raridon (6-6)—will close that gap. Josh McDaniels emphasized leveraging size, speed and quickness to create mismatches near the goal line.

During camp, Doubs impressed with contested catches, earning three touchdowns, while Hollins added two and others also found the end zone. Receivers coach Todd Downing likened Doubs’ ability to playing above the rim, and teammates praised the new group’s chemistry with quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots will continue to focus on red-zone drills ahead of their season opener against the Seahawks.

Why it matters

Improved red-zone performance could turn the Patriots into a more complete offensive threat this season.
