Penang launches first 15 electric buses, aims for full fleet by March 2027
Penang's public transport operator began running 15 electric buses today, with a total of 75 expected to be in service by March next year.
At a ceremony in George Town, Transport Minister Anthony Loke unveiled the first 15 electric buses for Rapid Penang, signalling a shift toward low-emission public transport. Fourteen of the buses are 8.25 metres long, while a single 12-metre unit will serve routes with tighter streets on the island. The state aims to have 75 electric buses operating by March next year, and a total of 250 across Rapid KL and Rapid Penang by March 2027, funded by a RM200 million procurement.
So far, Rapid Bus has received 52 electric buses in the first phase, including the 15 for Penang. Depots will be equipped with charging infrastructure to ensure reliable service. Loke highlighted the move as a key component of Penang's carbon-reduction strategy and a boost for commuters and visitors.
