Penang pushes for 2027 budget funds to boost flights and tourism
Penang officials are asking the 2027 federal budget to fund an air-connectivity scheme and tourism projects, aiming to attract direct routes from markets such as Japan and the Middle East.
Wong Hon Wai, chair of Penang's Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, appealed to the upcoming 2027 Budget to prioritize investments that improve air links, host international events, and preserve George Town's heritage. Central to the request is an International Air Connectivity Fund that would provide matching grants to lure direct services from strategic regions including Japan, South Korea, Australia and the Middle East.
The fund would complement the ongoing expansion of Penang International Airport, which aims to boost annual passenger capacity from 6.8 million to 12 million within two years. Wong stressed that early coordination with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd is essential to fill the new slots with additional routes and higher frequencies. He also pointed to Penang's potential to develop its air-cargo sector, given the concentration of multinational corporations and rising demand for logistics services. Ongoing dialogue with the airport operator will focus on market intelligence, route development and future infrastructure projects.
Why it matters
Enhanced flight connections could drive tourism revenue and economic growth for Penang and its communities.
