Penang records unhealthy air quality levels across four monitoring sites
Four air quality stations in Penang reported API values above the unhealthy threshold, prompting health advisories for vulnerable groups.
At 11 am, four Penang air-quality stations logged API scores that exceed the unhealthy mark, with Minden reaching 167, Balik Pulau 164, Seberang Jaya 162 and Seberang Prai 160, according to the Department of Environment’s API Management System. State Housing and Environment Committee chairman S. Sundarajoo warned that while the public need not panic, people in the affected zones should curb heavy or extended outdoor exertion, particularly children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with breathing problems.
He recommended that anyone developing coughs, chest tightness, sore throats or eye irritation limit exposure and consult a doctor if conditions worsen. Healthy individuals may continue routine activities but should stay informed of current readings and avoid unnecessary outings if levels stay high. The state will keep monitoring air quality, coordinate with the DoE on fire and open-burning incidents, and enforce existing laws to curb pollution sources.
