Penang steps up rabies vigilance after neighboring state's fatal case
Penang authorities have heightened rabies monitoring following a confirmed human death from the disease in Kedah.
In response to a recent rabies fatality in Kedah, Penang's health officials have intensified surveillance and preparedness measures. The death involved a 31-year-old male from Kubang Pasu who was infected after being bitten by a stray dog in August, representing the state's first confirmed human case since 1998. Penang's Health Department is coordinating with the Veterinary Services Department to monitor the situation closely.
Daniel Gooi, chair of the State Health Committee, reminded the public that Penang has not seen a human rabies case since 1975 and emphasized the need for prompt post-exposure treatment. He appealed to residents to obtain immediate care if bitten. The warning was issued during the Premis Bersih, Bebas Asap 2026 programme at Food Bayana in Bayan Lepas.
