Pennsylvania Governor launches portal for residents to weigh in on data center projects
Gov. Josh Shapiro unveiled an online platform allowing Pennsylvanians to submit concerns about local data center developments.
Governor Josh Shapiro introduced a digital portal for Pennsylvania residents to report objections to data center proposals in their neighborhoods. He framed the site as a defense against developers who attempt to bypass regulation and community input. The move follows an executive order signed earlier this week that establishes the strictest national standards for AI-related data centers, ending a fast-track permitting process that previously existed for projects meeting the state’s GRID criteria.
The order also mandates that the Department of Environmental Protection grant permits and permits local governments to block projects lacking local support. When municipalities do approve a facility, developers must secure a community-benefits agreement. Shapiro warned that companies unwilling to meet these guardrails will need to look elsewhere for business.
Why it matters
The portal gives citizens a direct voice in shaping high-energy data center projects that affect local resources and infrastructure.
