Pensioners Have One Day Left to Decline This Year's Winter Fuel Payment

British pensioners must decide by 11.59 pm on Sunday whether to receive the Winter Fuel Payment, or risk a full tax claw-back if their income exceeds £35,000.

The annual Winter Fuel Payment, intended to help older Britons with heating costs, offers between £100 and £300 depending on age and circumstances. Pensioners whose total taxable income exceeds £35,000 will see the entire sum reclaimed by HMRC through adjustments to their PAYE tax code or self-assessment return. To avoid this automatic recovery, eligible individuals must log in online and opt out before 11.59 pm on Sunday, providing their National Insurance number.

The Department for Work and Pensions explained that most qualifying pensioners will receive a letter in October or November indicating the amount, with payments typically made in November or December 2026. The claw-back process will begin in January, and the Association of Taxation Techniques noted that online self-assessment filings will pre-populate the repayment details for high-income claimants.

Why it matters

Pensioners need to act quickly to prevent an unexpected tax bill on a benefit meant to ease winter heating costs.
