Pentagon-backed quantum firms receive $100 million each, government takes minority stakes
The Commerce Department approved $300 million in R&D funding, giving $100 million each to D-Wave Quantum, Rigetti Computing and Quantinuum while acquiring non-controlling equity in all three.
Under a new initiative linked to the CHIPS and Science Act, the Commerce Department allocated a total of $300 million to three quantum-computing companies. Each firm—D-Wave Quantum, Rigetti Computing and Quantinuum—will receive $100 million in research and development support. In return, the federal government will obtain a minority ownership stake, aiming to let taxpayers share any future profits. The program is described as a portfolio approach to maintain U.S. leadership in quantum technology.
