Pentagon creates secret Technology Support Office to sabotage rival tech programs
The Pentagon has quietly established the Technology Support Office (TSO), a new elite unit to develop tools for covert disruption of foreign technologies deemed threats to U.S. military superiority.
The Pentagon has formed the Technology Support Office (TSO), an elite agency staffed by engineers, special-operations personnel and intelligence officers to plan covert actions against foreign technologies that could erode U.S. military advantage. The office, announced internally in April, merges two existing classified sabotage programs that had operated on a smaller scale since 2023. Steve Feinberg, the deputy secretary of defense, and Tom Rakusan, a former CIA operative, were key architects of the new structure, which now reports to the Undersecretary of War for Intelligence & Security.
TSO will not conduct operations directly but will work with senior army and intelligence officials to develop hacking tools, supply-chain disruptions and deceptive tactics, including the insertion of faulty components into enemy weapon systems. Leadership includes Grant Hundley, a former Marine special-operations officer, and William Nelson, an Army Futures Command veteran, who will oversee sensitive intelligence activities. The agency’s budget and contracting details have not been disclosed, though sources indicate it is seeking cutting-edge contractors for a broad range of capabilities.
Why it matters
TSO signals a major shift toward covert tech sabotage, potentially reshaping U.S. defense strategy and raising oversight concerns.
