Pentagon Secretary’s Senior Officer Purge Sparks Concerns Over Military Effectiveness

Former Marine Corps officer Virginia Burger, now a senior defense policy analyst, says Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s unprecedented purge of senior officers and interference with promotions endangers troops and creates doubts about top-level decisions. The campaign has already led to the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and left the Army’s civilian head vacant, while the chief of staff position remains empty after Hegseth forced General Randy George out in April.

Burger notes that more than half of the affected officers are Black or female, describing the purge as politically driven and contrary to the founders’ intent for an apolitical military. She warns that remaining leaders may make choices aimed at avoiding dismissal rather than prioritizing national security. Hegseth has publicly denounced diversity initiatives and climate-related programs, signaling a shift toward aligning the force with his personal values.

The allegations come amid broader concerns that the loss of experienced senior leaders could weaken the Pentagon’s operational effectiveness. The Pentagon has not responded to requests for comment.
