Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised Parnell’s contributions to drafting the legislation and rallying congressional support, while Trump himself called Parnell instrumental.
However, Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer and other lawmakers expressed concern over Parnell’s record, including accusations of spousal abuse that surfaced during his 2021 Senate campaign. The controversy comes as Hegseth seeks to appoint the Afghanistan-veteran Parnell as Army secretary, despite opposition from some GOP members and questions about his past conduct.
