Perak immigration officials detain 109 foreign workers in early morning raids

The Perak Immigration Department seized 109 foreign nationals during two Ops Gegar raids in Ipoh, including a sweep of the wholesale market.

In a coordinated Ops Gegar operation, the Perak Immigration Department apprehended 109 foreign nationals in Ipoh, with one raid targeting the city’s wholesale market in the early hours. Datuk Lokman Effendi Ramli, deputy director-general (operations), reported that the detainees, ranging from 19 to 59 years old, included 34 women and 75 men originating from Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia and Bangladesh. Authorities identified violations such as lack of proper documentation, overstaying visas and misuse of work permits.

Following the arrests, the individuals were taken to the state immigration office for verification before being sent to an immigration detention depot. The operation also resulted in five summonses issued to employers and property owners to aid ongoing investigations. The raids are part of more than 11,000 operations conducted since the start of the year, which have screened nearly 150,000 foreigners.

Why it matters
