Perak proposes 24-hour CCTV surveillance at Menora Tunnel after recent slope collapse

A recent landslide near the Menora Tunnel prompted the Perak state government to propose a dedicated monitoring station that would operate continuously with CCTV coverage of the surrounding slopes. State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the plan is part of immediate actions that also include increased patrols by Plus Malaysia Bhd and new hazard signage on both sides of the North-South Expressway.

The collapse, attributed to unusually heavy rainfall—about 65-66 mm versus the normal 40 mm—and consequent soil movement that dislodged a tree, caused a traffic jam extending up to 15 km. Initial mitigation by the Malaysian Highway Authority and Plus involved slope stabilisation and plastic sheeting to block water infiltration, while longer-term engineering options are being evaluated. Real-time rain sensors already in place will alert operators to heavy downpours, prompting rapid deployment of patrol teams. Both Plus Malaysia and the highway authority assure motorists that the route remains safe as monitoring continues.
