Perikatan Nasional seeks court stay on society suspension ahead of Melaka vote

Perikatan Nasional will ask the Kuala Lumpur High Court to suspend a Registrar of Societies order that bars its activities as the Melaka election approaches.

Perikatan Nasional is set to appear before the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Thursday, requesting a stay of the Registrar of Societies’ suspension order dated Sept 23 that blocks all party activities except those defending a registration cancellation notice. The court previously allowed PN to pursue a judicial review of two RoS notices but denied a stay pending the review’s outcome. The ruling will be crucial as the coalition prepares for the Melaka state election on Nov 14.

At the same time, the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya will manage an appeal by Datuk Mubarak Dohak and five other traditional chiefs challenging a High Court decision that permitted contempt proceedings by the Negri Sembilan DKU. Additional hearings include a suit by former Negri Sembilan executive councillors over their removal and a committal application by entrepreneur Christy Ng against J. Vikneshvra Rau for defying a court-ordered apology. The cluster of cases underscores mounting legal pressures on political figures ahead of upcoming elections.

Why it matters

The ruling will decide if PN can legally campaign in the pivotal Melaka election and highlights escalating legal battles affecting Malaysian politics.
