Perlis chief minister suspended from Bersatu for two election cycles

Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has been barred from Bersatu membership for two party election terms starting Oct 13, with a 14-day window to appeal.

A disciplinary decision issued on Oct 13 has suspended Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah from the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu) for two election cycles, effective Oct 13. The suspension letter, dated Oct 14 and signed by Disciplinary Board chairman Datuk Mohd Radzi Manan, w. The board said Abu Bakar violated Clause 9.1.4 of the party constitution and its Code of Ethics, invoking Clause 22.5 to strip him of party rights.

As a result, he automatically forfeits all party offices and is barred from issuing statements on behalf of Bersatu until the suspension ends. He may lodge an appeal to the party’s Appeals Board within 14 days, after which a decision from the central leadership and state assemblymen is expected. The notice had already spread widely on social media.

Why it matters

The suspension removes the state chief minister from party roles, potentially reshaping Perlis politics and Bersatu's internal dynamics.
