Personal Locator Beacon Saves Five Fishermen After Mississippi Gulf Coast Boat Sinks

A five-person fishing team off the Mississippi Gulf Coast survived a sudden boat sinking thanks to a personal locator beacon that triggered NASA-derived satellite rescue signals.

A fishing competition on Memorial Day weekend turned perilous when a boat carrying five participants sank abruptly off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, leaving the crew adrift for four hours. With no cellular service, Easton Barrett recorded a brief farewell on his phone before a teammate activated a ResQLink personal locator beacon. The beacon transmitted an emergency alert to the international SARSAT system, a satellite network whose origins trace back to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

The signal was picked up by the nearest ground station, prompting a Florida Coast Guard rescue boat to locate and retrieve the five men. Barrett now advocates the use of personal locator beacons for water safety, noting that the technology has saved more than 63,000 lives worldwide. The rescue underscores the continued relevance of NASA-derived satellite tracking in emergency response.
