Personalized brain mapping shows promise in easing stubborn chronic pain
A small case series demonstrated that targeting individually mapped brain regions with precise electrical pulses can reduce severe chronic facial pain.
In a pilot study published in Brain Stimulation, scientists used detailed brain-activity maps to locate the neural sources of chronic facial pain in three patients. Temporary electrodes were inserted through small skull openings, and over three days researchers tested various stimulation sites and patterns. Two participants reported pain reduction; one woman later received four permanent electrodes and remained improved at six and twelve months, while another patient plans a permanent implant soon.
The third volunteer showed little benefit, providing valuable data on when the technique may not work. Experts emphasized that tailoring stimulation to each brain's unique network could guide future treatments for chronic pain and related psychiatric conditions. The team aims to expand the method to other disorders, viewing it as a step toward more precise neuromodulation therapies.
