Peter Magyar slams Fidesz and KDNP for appealing to EU commissioner over alleged arbitrariness

Peter Magyar condemned Fidesz and KDNP for asking the EU commissioner for a ruling on the Tisza government's "arbitrary" actions, calling the move contemptible.

Peter Magyar used his Facebook page to harshly criticize Fidesz and KDNP after they sent a letter to EU Commissioner Michael McGrath seeking a statement on the Tisza government’s purported "arbitrary" measures. Magyar described the coalition’s actions as shameful, noting that they intimidate Hungarian prosecutors and police while rushing to Brussels with complaints they have historically denounced. The letter to the commissioner alleges that retroactive, personalized legislation, the dismissal of independent public officials, and concept procedures targeting opposition figures are building an authoritarian regime.

Magyar also pointed out that the European Commission must apply uniform standards across member states, after years of what he calls unfounded political pressure. He recalled earlier correspondence from Deutsch Tamás regarding the recent arrest of former culture minister Hankó Balázs, which he says was initiated on Magyar’s personal orders. The episode underscores growing tensions between Hungary’s ruling parties and EU oversight mechanisms.
