Petition Calls for Criminal Action Against Chief Election Commissioner Over SIR Decisions

A lawyer has filed a petition under Article 32 in the Supreme Court seeking criminal prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that he acted without the concurrence of the other two Election Commissioners on decisions, guidelines and software changes related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi have recorded at least fourteen objections over the past ten months to actions such as voter enrolment, deletions and changes to Form 6, describing them as unauthorized and illegal.

The petition requests that the contested SIR orders be declared unconstitutional and nullified. Opposition leaders have demanded Kumar’s resignation and called for a Supreme Court‑supervised investigation into the matter.
