Petr Hlaváček and Tomáš Portlík emerge as frontrunners for Prague mayoral seat

The upcoming Prague mayoral election is expected to be a showdown between architect Petr Hlaváček and Prague 9 mayor Tomáš Portlík, while other parties face slim odds.

The article assesses that the Prague mayoral contest will probably be decided between Petr Hlaváček, an architect heading the Starostové, and Tomáš Portlík, the Spolu-backed mayor of Prague 9. Jan Hušbauer, now leading ANO’s campaign after Ondřej Prokop’s scandals, may secure only a city-council seat, as ANO cannot assemble a majority with its allies SPD and the Motoristé. The Civic Democrats and Starostové have not ruled out cooperating with ANO, but only if they obtain the mayor’s office.

The Pirate Party’s candidate, economist Tereza Nislerová, has little chance of winning, though a strong council presence could be their only path to influence. Praha sobě, led by former transport deputy Adam Scheinherr, seeks to position itself as a managerial alternative, attracting support from the Civic Democrats and Greens. Overall, the mayoral battle appears to be a two-horse race, with other parties playing peripheral roles.

Why it matters

Prague’s mayor will shape the capital’s policies and development for the next four years.
