Petrol and diesel prices rise as government lifts rates by Rs6.88 and Rs5.62 per litre

Effective Sept 17, the government announced a rise of Rs6.88 per litre for petrol, setting the retail price at Rs391.22, and a Rs5.62 per litre increase for high-speed diesel, bringing its price to Rs421.45. Taxes and duties continue at Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority linked the revision to elevated international market prices, premiums and related factors.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif introduced a relief scheme offering Rs100 per litre subsidies to owners of motorcycles, autos and vehicles up to 800 cc, with monthly quotas of 20 or 30 litres. The petroleum minister had previously moved fuel pricing to daily adjustments due to market volatility stemming from renewed Iran-US hostilities.
