Pharmacists' union urges government to define permanent roles for contract staff
The Malaysian Pharmacists Society has asked the government to provide a clear pathway to permanent employment for contract pharmacists, echoing the budget’s promise to regularise contract doctors.
The Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) appealed to the government for a definitive plan to transition contract pharmacists into permanent roles, stressing fairness and recognition for their contributions to medication management and safety. President Amrahi Buang highlighted the ongoing uncertainty over career progression for pharmacists serving in hospitals, health clinics and other ministry facilities. He requested a transparent timeline, clear appointment mechanisms, and meaningful engagement with the profession to assess long-term pharmacy workforce needs.
The appeal comes after the 2027 Budget disclosed that over 9,000 contract doctors will receive permanent positions, alongside a raise in the monthly post-basic incentive for 47,000 paramedics and nurses from RM100 to RM200. The Health Ministry’s budget will increase to RM47.7 billion next year. MPS emphasized that while appointment processes differ across health professions, contract pharmacists should not be left without clarity indefinitely.
Why it matters
