PhD student defeats SSE over bogus electricity debt using AI assistance

SSE Energy Supply continued to invoice Lyle Hopkins, a University of Oxford doctoral student, for business rates on a phantom electricity meter linked to a failed property conversion, totaling £1,091.01 over 20 months. Although an internal email in June 2024 stated Hopkins was not liable, the firm still engaged debt collectors. Hopkins, a software engineer, turned to AI platforms GPT-5.5 and Claude Fable for case-law research and drafted his own court documents, ultimately prevailing in the Oxford County Court on July 17 and being awarded £1,087.88 including expenses and interest.

The presiding judge noted the company’s conduct amounted to a "rollercoaster ride" and warned that persisting would be harassment. Despite the judgment, SSE issued another bill, prompting Hopkins to consider further action. He funded his legal AI usage at roughly £175 and declined a confidential settlement that would have limited his ability to speak about the case.
