Philip Morris International highlights €70 bn EU contribution and Romanian growth in new economic impact study
Philip Morris International released a study showing its EU operations generated billions in supplier spending, investments and exports, while its Romanian plant supports thousands of jobs and a large export volume.
Philip Morris International published the second edition of its "Economic Footprint in the European Union" study, which quantifies the firm’s contribution to the regional economy through supplier payments, capital projects and export activity. The report notes significant investment in European operations and a large share of exports to global markets. In Romania, PMI has poured more than $1.1 bn into the country over the past 30 years, including over $730 m since 2017 to transform its Otopeni factory into a high-technology hub for heated-tobacco products, with over 90% of its output shipped to more than 50 destinations across five continents.
The Romanian site supports roughly 9,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs and has fostered an ecosystem of about 4,000 local suppliers. PMI also highlights that smoke-free products generated roughly 42% of its adjusted net revenue in 2025 and are used by an estimated 43 million adults worldwide, many of whom have reduced or quit smoking.
Why it matters
The data shows PMI's significant economic role in Europe and its shift toward smoke-free products, affecting jobs, investment and public health trends.
