Philippe Sands receives German Book Trade Peace Prize, reflects on Israel case

British lawyer and author Philippe Sands was honored with the German Book Trade’s Peace Prize at the Frankfurt Book Fair and discussed his recent International Court of Justice victory over Israel’s West Bank occupation.

The Frankfurt Book Fair honored British lawyer-author Philippe Sands with the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels, recognizing his contributions to historical scholarship and international law. Sands, 66, has written acclaimed works such as “Rückkehr nach Lemberg,” “Die letzte Kolonie,” and the 2025 title “Die Verschwundenen von Londres 38.” His most prominent recent courtroom appearance was a February 2024 oral argument before the International Court of Justice, where he denounced the illegality of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, a position the judges fully endorsed, ordering Israel to withdraw.

He described himself as a thoughtful yet friendly interlocutor, emphasizing the need for sustained commitment in the face of daunting challenges.
