Philippine authorities detain around 50 suspected online groomers linked to school shooting plots

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced the arrest of roughly 50 alleged online groomers who were planning attacks tied to the Banga school shooting, saying all 53 planned incidents in South Cotabato were thwarted.

At the first Metro Manila School Safety and Security Summit, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla revealed that authorities had arrested approximately 50 people suspected of online grooming and planning school attacks related to the recent Banga shooting in South Cotabato. He stated that a total of 53 planned school shootings in the region were prevented by police action. Because the investigations involve children who are in conflict with the law, officials could not discuss details earlier.

National Capital Region Police Office officer-in-charge Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano said the police have a standardized response plan and templates to guide schools during such threats. The arrests underscore heightened concerns over online radicalisation and school safety in the Philippines.

Why it matters

The arrests prevent potential school shootings and highlight efforts to curb online grooming that could endanger students.
