Philippines AIDS Society warns of rising HIV infections among youth by 2030

The AIDS Society of the Philippines says HIV cases among 15--24-year-olds are set to become the majority of new infections by 2030.

The AIDS Society of the Philippines (ASP) warned that, unless action is taken, the bulk of new HIV infections will occur among individuals aged 15 to 24 by 2030. ASP President Dr. Rossana Ditangco explained that risky sexual behaviors start in the mid-teens, while access to condoms, PrEP and testing is often delayed, creating a window for transmission. She cited early sexual debut among female sex workers and men who have sex with men, followed by later condom use, as a key factor.

ASP data show low comprehensive HIV knowledge among young people, and the society urged the government and stakeholders to provide proper sex education and promote condom use from the first sexual encounter. DOH trainer Ryan Pinili added that stigma and misconceptions about preventive tools hinder outreach, and emphasized the need to publicize free government-provided commodities. The organization called for a holistic prevention strategy that combines biomedical tools with emotional, psychological and social support.

Why it matters

Youth-driven HIV growth could strain public health resources and reverse progress in the Philippines.
