Philippines aims to let all households pick electricity supplier by 2031
The Energy Regulatory Commission is drafting a five-year plan to lower the retail threshold so every Filipino home can choose its power provider by 2031.
Regulators in the Philippines are working on a roadmap that will reduce one outlet 50-kilowatt retail threshold. The Energy Regulatory Commission says the plan will span five years and is intended to give all households the option to select an electricity supplier. The move follows earlier proposals to expand consumer choice in the power market. If successful, the change will be in effect by 2031.
Why it matters
Allowing households to choose their electricity supplier could increase competition and lower power costs for consumers.
