Philippines Holds Top Tier 1 Spot in US Trafficking Report Ahead of ASEAN Crime Summit

The Philippines has maintained its Tier 1 ranking in the U.S. State Department’s 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report for the eleventh year in a row.

For the eleventh consecutive year, the Philippines retained its Tier 1 classification in the U.S. State Department’s 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report, indicating full compliance with minimum anti-trafficking standards. The ASEAN Committee on Media Affairs and Strategic Communications released the news, and Interior Undersecretary Nestor Sanares cited several recent initiatives, including the nationwide Victim Identification System, enhancements to the National Referral Mechanism, expanded prosecutorial task forces under IACAT, and the launch of the ProtectPortal portal.

Sanares emphasized that the designation does not imply the eradication of trafficking but reflects ongoing governmental commitment. The timing aligns with the Philippines’ role as host of the 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime, where officials from ASEAN members, China, Japan, and South Korea will discuss stronger coordination and protection measures. Senior officials gathered in Makati for preparatory talks, underscoring the country’s push for tangible results in combating complex criminal threats.

Why it matters

The ranking signals the Philippines' continued compliance with international anti-trafficking standards as it leads a major regional crime summit.
