Philippines launches extensive farm-to-market road program across five Luzon regions

The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Public Works and Highways have agreed to implement a farm-to-market road initiative covering 605 projects in five Luzon regions.

The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Public Works and Highways signed a memorandum of agreement to launch a farm-to-market road program covering 605 projects and a total length of 604 kilometres in five Luzon regions: Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region. The initiative will be overseen through infrastructure monitoring mechanisms and a digital portal that will follow each project's status from planning to construction.

By enhancing road networks, the government aims to link farm producers with traders, processors and consumers, thereby expanding access to services and economic prospects in rural areas. The program aligns with the upcoming 2027 DA budget, which proposes a substantial allocation for farm-to-market roads. Previously, the Department of Agrarian Reform reported that 537 such projects had been completed since 2022, covering over 435 kilometres and benefiting more than 155,000 agrarian reform beneficiaries.

Why it matters

Better rural roads can lower transport costs and open markets for farmers, supporting economic growth in Luzon's agricultural communities.
