Philippines Leads Push for Policies to Boost ASEAN Competitiveness Ahead of Summit

Trade Secretary Cristina Roque chaired the 58th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting and related sessions at the Philippine International Convention Centre in Pasay City, focusing on policies to enhance ASEAN’s global competitiveness before the November summit. Delegates examined ways to boost trade and investment, accelerate digital transformation, support micro, small and medium enterprises, and promote innovation and sustainable growth.

Roque urged leaders to adopt clear recommendations, citing a 10.1% surge in foreign direct investment to US$245.7 billion and strong gains in machinery and digital merchandise trade. The talks also addressed the pending Digital Economy Framework Agreement and preparations for the ASEAN Free Trade Area Council, including the Second Protocol to amend ATIGA and expanded customs and operator arrangements. She framed the Philippines’ chairmanship as a “kilometre zero” for the ASEAN Community Vision’s first year of implementation, emphasizing the need to turn economic figures into tangible benefits for the region’s people and enterprises.
