Philippines' NSC denounces repeated Chinese incursions in its maritime zones

The National Security Council condemned a series of alleged illegal Chinese activities in Philippine waters, saying they endanger fishermen and breach international law.

In a fresh statement, the National Security Council criticised multiple alleged Chinese violations within Philippine maritime zones, including waste disposal around Kota Island, illegal fishing near Lawak Island and unapproved marine research near Batanes. The council said these acts jeopardise the safety of Filipino crews, damage the income of coastal fishers and contravene the 1982 UNCLOS framework and a prior arbitral award.

It reiterated that the Philippines maintains sovereign rights over its territorial sea, EEZ and continental shelf. Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela of the Philippine Coast Guard dismissed accusations of anti-China sentiment, labeling ambassador Jing Quan and the Chinese Communist Party as aggressive and greedy. Tarriela highlighted ongoing harassment of Filipino fishermen and the armed forces, and noted no Chinese research vessels are currently being monitored in the northern EEZ.

Why it matters

The accusations highlight escalating maritime tensions that could affect regional security and fishing livelihoods.
