Philippines prepares to file extradition request for cult leader Apollo Quiboloy
The Justice Secretary announced that the Philippines will soon submit a petition to extradite Apollo Quiboloy to the United States.
Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida told reporters that the Department of Justice is about to file a petition to extradite Apollo Quiboloy, the Davao-based founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, to the United States. The request follows a U.S. demand for his surrender on multiple counts, including sex-trafficking and racketeering. Vida said the petition will be lodged with a local trial court and that the Philippines will comply with its extradition treaty obligations.
Chief State Counsel Dennis Chan has expressed confidence that the petition will meet treaty requirements. Quiboloy is already facing a non-bailable human-trafficking charge in Pas-g-city court and additional child-protection statutes, and he is currently held in Pasig City Jail.
Why it matters
The case tests the Philippines' adherence to its extradition treaty and could lead to a high-profile trial in the United States.
